The rail gauge for the
quay cranes at the Northern Terminal is 30 meters.
This enables the cranes to work at an increased speed
as the Tractor/Trailer units are loaded or off-loaded
directly under the crane and not in the back reach
as has been past practiced in Jeddah.
The close proximity of
the Rubber Tyred Gantry container stacks to quay side
ensures that the time taken to move containers to
or from the stack to quay side is kept to a minimum.
Shift Management and Vessel/Yard
Planning offices are situated at the quay side, thus
ensuring that any planning changes are dealt with
without delay. This also enables vessel and Landside
support equipment is of an equally high standard with
15 Rubber Tyred Gantry cranes capable of lifting one
container over five, 6 Reach Stackers able to lift
containers five high, Empty Container Handlers also
able to stack containers five high. This equipment
is served by a fleet of new high performance Terberg
Tractors with Buisscar Cornerless Trailers. These
trailers eliminate the need for cranes to hold containers
up at the quayside while twist locks are either detached
or fitted. This has been a major problem encountered
in improving productivity at terminals with narrow
rail gauges for quay cranes.
In order to improve
the handling of Reefer containers, Gulf have installed
Reefer Gantry Platforms at the Northern Terminal.
These facilitate the connection to power and monitoring
of the condition of such units without the need for
staff having to work from ladders. It is possible
to stack Reefer containers four high at the new Reefer
Gantries, there being 432 connection points installed
for Phase One of operations. Gulf is using the full
Navis Terminal and Planning Software package at the
Northern Terminal which interfaces with the Teklogix
Radio Data Transmission system enabling us to run
a real-time Terminal Operation which provides customers
with a very much better service than has been available
at Jeddah until now.
Advantages:
1. Quay side Gantry cranes with an outreach of 20 containers.
2. Cutting edge Information technology.
3. State – of – the – art cranes and infrastructure.
4. Twin – Lift spreaders enabling lifting of 2 * 20’ containers at a time.
5. No deviation of sea – route.
6. Reduced time for the customs brokers through strategic
enclosure of Customs & Gulf Liasion offices.
